For many years, in line with Waters’ mission to Deliver Benefit to customers and society, our philanthropy work has supported the enhancement of human health and well-being. Our efforts focus primarily on education, healthcare and community, which is evident in the diversity of the global charitable programs we lead as well as in local initiatives.
We do this through financial support and in-kind donations, and through employee volunteer efforts in both Waters sponsored partnerships as well as employee personal time.
The Waters STEM Ambassador Program focuses on education, exposure and experiences for students through their journey from elementary through university schooling. Our commitment to the education of the next generation of students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) is inspired by the passion of our employees to Deliver Benefit within their local communities.
The STEM Live educational video series is hosted by Waters scientists, technologists or engineers from around the global and can be viewed from the classroom, living room or laboratories. Each experiment teaches students of all ages about science and how to learn anywhere, including their home laboratories.
Another way Waters is supporting the next generation of STEM professionals, is in partnership with Junior Achievement Worldwide, one of the world’s largest youth-serving NGOs (non-governmental organizations) that prepares young people for employment and entrepreneurship. Across nine cities, in six countries, we have hosted students in our labs for hands on learning and career preparation.
Our corporate and employee charitable donations support a broad range of healthcare institutions, from Boston Children’s Hospital to a leading cancer research center in the UK (The Christie), to community healthcare initiatives in India.
Waters India provided funds to the IDL Foundation in Bangalore to support an Eye Check and Treatment Camp for nearly 400 visually impaired people at the Modi Eye Hospital. After the free examination, more than 100 were scheduled for cornea or cataract treatments and about 200 received eyeglasses and canes.
In the U.S., through the Pan-Mass Challenge, Waters employees have raised more than $640,000 in donations for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute since 2017. The annual bike-a-thon across Massachusetts, established in 1980, has grown to draw 6,700 cyclists from around the world and, significantly, the Institute receives 100% of every dollar raised. Despite the challenges with the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Waters 2020 team conducted a virtual ride with 35 riders and 25 volunteers.
Waters employees continue to volunteer their time, talent and financial support to help communities throughout the world, from packaging 20,000 meals for distribution in Mozambique with Rise Against Hunger to coaching and mentoring under-privileged youth in the U.S., to donating to more than 250 distinct charitable organizations with impact around the globe.
For example, hundreds of employees in our Delaware facility partnered with the Ministry of Caring and volunteered their time by packing thousands of lunches for Emmanuel Dining Room and participated in an “Adopt-a-Child” holiday wish list program.
At the corporate level, Waters’ donations to the Red Cross continue as an integral component of our commitment to supporting communities in need where we work and live. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we donated to various local and global organizations that supplied personal protective equipment for frontline workers.
